i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. a fight over prices has left more than 100 crab fishing boats idled in port today. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec at pier 45 in san francisco, where the fresh crab supply may fail to satisfy the big holiday demand. >> reporter: can you hear the rejoicing coming from under the sea here behind me? crabs are off the hook for now. and they have been all week. the boats there behind me, those are cab boats. and they have been idle since monday. nobody's making money. >> reporter: tensions are high on pier 45 where a lone crab boat came in this morning. a strike has all the others docked. >> we're tied up negotiating with the processors. >> reporter: a dispute over the price. they had agreed on $3 a pound at the start of the season in november but demand went down

after thanksgiving so wholesalers want to pay a quarter to 75 cents less. the crab boat association says no deal. >> there's not that much crab left out there. we took a big whack out of it. so it should be worth as much or more than before. >> reporter: this boat which locals call a scab came from oregon. >> trying to keep everything going. >> reporter: things are coming to a standstill at local fish markets. >> bad for business. >> reporter: this shop has only frozen crabs in stock. alioto's has a tank of fresh ones but is running out quickly and fears having to turn customers away. >> it's hard. the city is world famous for dungeness crab. like not being able to gamble in vegas. >> trying to hold out for a price we can afford to go fishing for. >> reporter: as behind the scenes negotiations continue and boats that cross the picket

line face the ire of the rest. >> going fishing. >> that's everything that's wrong with this industry. >> reporter: the crab season up in oregon has also been delayed but that's expected to maybe open up next week. and that should open up our market here as well as far as getting some supply of fresh crab in. by all predictions i've heard this should be worked out by christmas. in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. nine months after a rash of robberies on the carquinez bridge miss have three suspects in -- police have three suspects in custody. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in vallejo where officials just announced the results of a long investigation. >> reporter: these arrests were part of an effort by chp, transportation agencies and local law enforcement. >> in case was an excellent example of law enforcement working together for our common goal of public safety. >> reporter: chp investigators through surveillance video and

evidence were able to tie at least three of the ten robberies to three vallejo men. >> in the past 7 days, two of the suspects were arrested and a third is also in custody. he was already in custody on an unrelated matter. >> reporter: the suspects would wear masks making it difficult to identify them through video. one big clue in the case the cars used in the robberies were stolen and the three suspects were known car thieves. >> we knew who from past experience people stealing cars or problems in the past and surveillance was leading to names of people that were involved. >> reporter: the robbery started late year up until may of this year. investigators say they used weapons and threatening toll plaza employees. in total almost $6,000 was stolen. >> they were just basically approaching the toll plaza and demand money by use of force or showing a weapon or sometimes not and then just flee on i-80.

>> reporter: as a result of the robberies, chp stepped up security at the toll plaza to protect employees and ultimately catch who is responsible. >> our primary focus was on the safety of the tolltakers as well as catching the robbers and the safety of all the citizens that use the bridge. >> reporter: we're told this is still an ongoing investigation. chp believes there could be other suspects out there and they say they will continue until all cases are solved. by the carquinez bridge, cate caugiran, cbs 5. more bay area headlines now on this thursday afternoon. oakland police are searching for a driver who hit a police officer [ signal breakup ] police say the officer wasn't seriously injured but the driver could face hit-and-run charges. a geyser of water closed a main entrance into the bay bridge. a car hit a fire hydrant in the city. the driver was taken to the hospital in police custody. they are looking into whether

drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. back on capitol hill, lawmakers are talking about the consequences of taxes going up on the middle class. outside groups are turning up the pressure for congress and the president to reach of a deal. cbs reporter danielle nottingham reports from washington. >> representative maloney -- >> reporter: lawmakers are getting an earful about why they need to avoid the so- called "fiscal cliff." >> you got it nail this down. uncertainly is killing us. >> reporter: top economists came to capitol hill thursday to talk about the impact of tax increases and government spending consults on the middle class. >> creating jobs -- >> reporter: president obama and house speaker john boehner spoke on the phone wednesday but publicly are holding firm on their positions. the white house has made clear the country could go over the cliff if republicans refuse to raise taxes on the top 2% of american earners. >> to do that to 98% of the american people, because of an insistence that the wealthiest

americans get a tax cut would be profoundly wrong. >> reporter: republican leaders say they will close loopholes and eliminate tax breaks but bush-era tax cuts must be extended to all americans. >> reporter: the standoff and debt concerns ryan. so much so, that he is the guy if the suit dancing gangnam style with former senator alan simpson. the group the can kicks back is working to get young people involved in fixing the debt crisis. >> we are trying to connect with our generation in a different way using humor to hook them in and get them to learn about this issue and understand how it affects their lives. >> reporter: the grassroots campaign wants to sign up more than 2 million people to push pressure on both sides. danielle nottingham, cbs 5. lawyers for the world's top two smartphone makers are back in san jose in a courtroom this

afternoon. that would be apple and samsung in the middle of a $1 billion patent fight. samsung wants the court to overturn an earlier verdict that determined the stole apple's iphone and ipad designs and apple wants more money. >> they want to add another half billion dollars of damages on that and more importantly they want to ban several older models of samsung devices from being sold in the u.s. including the key galaxy s2 which still sells very well. >> the case is ultimately expected to land before the u.s. federal circuit court of appeals in washington, d.c. meantime afternoonle's ceoism cook announced a chaim. tim cook says they will be investing over $100 million to build and assemble some apple products here in the united states. no word on where in the u.s. those apple products though will be produced. had a couple of holes in the skill drilled and they pass the wires in. >> up next, a surprising new

worker rights, worker rights, cesar chavez was a fierce fighter but as sharon chin reports north bay farm workers have had their own faithful friend for the past 30 years this week's jefferson award winner. reporter: 60-year-old moases sanchez has a place to call home. he spent many years homeless and nearly four decades as a migrant worker in the napa valley vineyard. >> sometimes sleeping in the car. >> reporter: or in the fields. >> it's very have hard. >> reporter: but at the river ranch farm worker housing center in st. helena he and 60 other laborers get bedrooms, three meals a day and hot showers. >> he rest much better. he doesn't really worry about his safety. >> reporter: the workers give thanks for father john brenkle a champion of farm worker housing for nearly 30 years. >> this valley is so darn prosperous. it was a scandal having them sleeping in cars. >> reporter: when he first came to saint helena catholic church in 1983 he immediately noticed the plight of the farm worker. at night he would see up to 40 of them crowded onto the church porch to sleep. >> when i went to bed in my warm bed, i felt very uncomfortable.

>> reporter: at first, father brenkle offered showers and meals at his church and set up a tent city in yountville. and he organized groups to create long-term housing. in 2002 they passed measure l allowing landowners to donate less than 40-acre parcels for housing. for farm workers. >> our slogan in the church was vote for l or go to hell. >> reporter: his leadership gave rise to three farm worker owned it is centers to houseworkers. it houses 200 workers. laborers pay $12 a night to cover half the operating cost. a voluntary tax on vintners covers the rest. angel calderon runs the centers. he says the 81-year-old priest created a model for farm worker housing. >> he was a saint because i don't know everybody else in

announced she is pregnant. she and her husband, prince william, left the london hospital where kate spent three nights for severe morning sickness. as the duchess was still feeling symptoms, she didn't show it. she told the press she was doing much better. kate was bundled up to guard against the cold and to protect the royal bundle of joy. >> it's a great end to a great year. so i think everybody in the uk will be very excited. >> reporter: kate is going to take it easy here at the couple's london home kensington palace. the duchess has canceled all her public events for the weekend. >> really excited about it. >> reporter: prince charles the soon-to-be grandfather said he is thrilled will and kate are having a baby [ indiscernible ] grandfather at my old age, so that's splendid. i'm very glad my daughter-in- law is getting better thank goodness. >> reporter: medical experts say kate's condition which causes vomiting and dehydration sometimes lasts the entire

[ laughter ] >> folks, around the bay area today finally catching a break in the stormy weather outside we have had plenty of clouds but that's even starting to break up a little bit over the bay right now. the temperatures running into the 50s and some low 60s at the moment. but i think as we head to the afternoon going to see a few more 60s popping up around the bay area. still, trying to clear out those skies. a lot of moisture left over from the storms that have moved on through. tonight patchy dense fog develops in some of the valleys but dry weather ahead as we sail in toward the weekend. it looks like dry weather now. the cold front has moved by. high pressure building in behind it. we'll see an offshore wind kicking in maybe on sunday that's going to warm up the

temperatures very nicely. into the afternoon the clouds break up and you will notice dense tule fog in the central valley. it will work back into the bay area overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. so temperatures not a bad day just a little bit cool. some 50s and low 60s into the san jose area. you will see some 60s as you as you make your way into the tri- valley. about 60 even in pleasant hill and inside the bay 50s and 60s expected for highs today so you get the idea, it's nice to have a dry day, still temperatures staying down a bit but things change in the latter part of the weekend. we are going to warm those temperatures up. some 60s maybe mid- to upper 60s if we're lucky on sunday and monday. then there's a slight chance of a few showers toward the middle of next week. by the bay, there's a huge game tonight at the oakland coliseum. don't want to miss this. yup, the broncos and the raid- as! they are playing tonight. i home it's fun, 58 degrees a little cool. other snow report in the high country mostly sunny, 4" of new
